Japan's Softbank buys UK's microchip firm ARM holdings for $32bn

The UK technology company ARM Holdings [pronounce arm not a.r.m] has confirmed it is to be bought by Japan's Softbank in a deal worth 32 billion US dollars...

ARM holdings - which makes microchips used in smartphones including Apple and Samsung products - has seen it's share price rise by 45 per cent on the news.

Sec Kerry Warns Turkey, Pays Tribute to Nice while in Brussels

The ongoing arrests and violence in Turkey in the wake of Friday's attempted coup have topped the agenda for US Secretary of State John Kerry's trip to Brussels.

While meeting with the EU's top diplomate, Secretary Kerry stressed the US supports the government of Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

But with six thousand arrested in Turkey since the coup attempt, the US Secretary of State also called on President Erdogan to respect human rights and the judicial system.

ARM HOLDINGS TO BE SOLD TO JAPANESE FIRM

British technology company ARM Holdings is being bought by Softbank of Japan for $32bn.

ARM designs chips used in many smartphones, and employs around 4000 people in the UK.

Softbank is reported to see ARM as well positioned to benefit from the growth of the so-called 'Internet of Things' - which will see chips helping to control devices from washing machines to smart buildings.

EU foreign policy chief calls on Turkey to uphold rule of law following failed coup attempt

Europe's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has called on Turkey to maintain rule of law in the wake of the failed coup attempt.

The European Union has condemned the coup but suggestions that the death penalty could be reintroduced have raised concerns internationally.

A deal between the EU and Turkey in dealing with the migrant crisis has held to slow down the numbers of people crossing the mediterranean from Turkey to Greece and Turkey is seen as a key played in the fight against the so-called Islamic State group.

WADA to release report into doping at Sochi Winter Olympics

The WADA Independent Commission led by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren is due to release a report on Monday on investigation into accusations of doping manipulations at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi. Baton Rouge Gunman Named

The man who shot dead three police officers in the US city of Baton Rouge has been named as 29 year old Gavin Long, an African American from Missouri.

 Long was killed by police after fatally shooting three officers and wounding three others on Sunday - an attack condemned by President Obama, who said such shootings were "the work of cowards who speak for no one."

Three Louisiana Police Officers Shot Dead


Three police officers have been shot dead in the US city of Baton Rouge in Louisiana.

Officials say one suspect is dead, and two 'persons of interest' have been detained nearby.

The motive for the attack isn't known, but Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy says the entire country has been affected by the attack.
