OSBORNE ABANDONS AUSTERITY AFTER BREXIT

UK Finance Minister George Osborne has given up his own target of reaching a budget surplus by 2020, warning of a shock to the economy because of Brexit.

It had been Mr Osborne's personal priority but he says Britain's decision to leave the European Union makes it unachievable.

Next UK PM candidate Gove outlines vision for UK out of EU

Michael Gove - one of the 5 candidates for the next UK Prime Minister - says he will end freedom of movement and bring migration numbers down...

The current Justice Secretary - who was a lead campaigner for the UK to leave the EU - says he had not wanted to stand for leader and does not have glamour or charisma, but added "I had to stand by my convictions".

Outlining his vision for the UK, he said money sent to Brussels will instead be put into the NHS and cutting VAT on fuel.

AUSTRIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS OVERTURNED

A constitutional court in Austria ruled the results of the country's presidential election in May were invalid because of voting irregularities, and that a new election will take place.

A far-right candidate narrowly lost the first contest in a closely-watched race.

Battle of the Somme centenary tributes

Tributes are being held to remember more than one million soldiers who were killed and injured in the historic Battle of the Somme which began 100 years ago.

The World War One battle saw the British and French armies fight the Germans on a 15-mile front in northern France.

Politicians and members of the Royal Family are among those who have been attending commemorations in the UK and France to mark the day the bloody battle began.

Poll: One-third of Germans believe Brexit won’t happen

A new poll showed that one-third of Germans don't believe the United Kingdom will leave the EU, despite the Leave campaign's victory in last week's referendum.

A majority of Germans also said they favor a more decentralized EU.

Ten women die off Libya in migrant boat

Ten women have died in a sinking boat in the mediterranean sea as they tried to make their into Europe from the Libyan coastline.

Another 107 refugees and migrants were rescued from the smuggler's vessel by the Italian coastguard.

Slovakia Assumes EU Presidency

For the first time since joining the European Union in 2004, Slovakia is taking the six-month rotating presidency of the EU.

THERESA MAY PICKS UP SUPPORT FOR LEADERSHIP

Theresa May is cementing her position as frontrunner to become new Conservative Party leader and therefore UK Prime Minister.

She's picked up the backing of further cabinet ministers, and has now been endorsed by the Daily Mail newspaper.

The Conservatives are holding a leadership contest with the result due to be revealed by September 9th.

It follows David Cameron's decision to step aside after losing a referendum on Britain's EU membership.

However, Conservative MP Andrew Rossendale believes the new leader should be someone who campaigned for Brexit.

SOMME CENTENARY MARKES

Commemorations are being held in the UK and France to mark the start of the Battle of the Somme which began 100 years ago.

It became the bloodiest day in British military history.

The five month Battle of the Somme in northern France went on to see over a million people killed and wounded.

The British and French armies fought the Germans along a 15 mile front during World War One.

Scientists Say Ozone Layer Beginning to Heal

Scientists from the U.S. and the U.K.  say they’ve found the first evidence that the thinning in the ozone layer above Antarctica is starting to heal. 

They say the gains are a result of  the long term phasing out of ozone destroying chemicals.

New research says Zika can be found in babies without obvious microcephaly symptoms


New research has found that newborns who do not show obvious signs of microcephaly may still be affected by the Zika virus.

Babies born with the Zika associated side effect microcephaly have unusually small heads.

US, Iraqi forces strike large Islamic State convoys

More than 150 Islamic State vehicles have been targeted by U.S. and Iraqi airstrikes in the region between Fallujah and Ramadi.

BoE Governor says monetary policy easing measures likley in the summer

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney has hinted the bank may need to implement interest rate cuts as monetary policy easing measures are likely to be required in the summer.

This comes after the UK voted for a departure from the  European Union which has prompted a fall in the value of the pound against major currencies.   It fell again on hints that economic stimulus measures might be forthcoming.    

Mr Carney said the vote for a Brexit meant Britain's economic outlook had, in his view,  deteriorated.    The governor said members of the bank's Monetary Policy Committee, known as the MPC will make an assessment of the economic outlook in the  middle of July.

US Compensates Family of Child Hit by UN Car

The US has sent compensation to the family of a boy in Cameroon who was hit by a vehicle in UN Ambassador Samatha Power's motorcade.

The seven year old was killed in April after being struck by the convoy, which was moving at high speed near the northern city of Mokolo.
