SOMME CENTENARY MARKES

Commemorations are being held in the UK and France to mark the start of the Battle of the Somme which began 100 years ago.

It became the bloodiest day in British military history.

The five month Battle of the Somme in northern France went on to see over a million people killed and wounded.

The British and French armies fought the Germans along a 15 mile front during World War One.

Military historian Allan Mallinson says it was a badly planned operation by British and French leaders.
