ICC sentence for DRC leader Jean-Pierre Bemba to 18 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity

The former vice-president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Bemba has been sentenced to 18 years in prison at the International Criminal Court.

He was convicted of 5 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for the actions of his troops who were sent in to the Central African Republic in 2002 to quell a coup against the country's then president Ange-Felix Patasse.

Bemba's defense team say the ICC's procedure was flawed and that they will appeal his conviction and call for mistrial.

The crimes he's convicted of include widespread gang rapes, murders and pillaging which the ICC says Bemba knew all about and did nothing to prevent.

The presiding judge in the case at the International Criminal Court is Sylvia Steiner.
