Osborne warns a Brexit will require emergency budget, his own MPs threaten to block the move

Britain's Finance Minister is warning he will be forced to slash public spending and increase tax revenues in an emergency budget if Britain votes for a so-called Brexit in an upcoming referendum on whether to stay or leave the European Union.

However a group of MP's from his own Conservative party have promised to block such a budget and said such cuts to public services to plug a hole in public finances would be unacceptable.    From London, Catherine Drew reports.

LILLE ON ALERT AS RUSSIA, SLOVAKIA, ENGLAND AND WALES CONVERGE

French police are on high alert in the city of Lille with Russian, Slovakian, English and Welsh fans gathering there for euro 2016 games.

Russia have been handed a suspended disqualification from the tournament over trouble which broke out at the end of their first match against England in Marseille.

Organisers UEFA have been criticised for scheduling today's Russia / Slovakia game just a few miles from Thursday's match between England and Wales.

And French policing tactics have also been criticised for exacerbating tensions last week in Marseille.

OSBORNE WARNS BREXIT WILL MEAN MASSIVE AUSTERITY

British finance minister George Osborne is warning of massive spending cuts and tax increases if the UK votes to leave the European Union.

He says he would be forced to put in place an emergency budget to tackle a massive 'black hole' in public finances in the event of a Brexit.

However, many of his own MPs accuse him of scare-mongering, as well as suggesting they wouldn't back such a budget, and moreover that Mr Osborne may no longer be in his job if a Brexit does take place.

Britain votes next Thursday on whether to stay in the European Union.

Political reporter Theo Usherwood says Mr Osborne's warning is stark.
