Clashes break out between police and opposition protesters in Venezuela

Venezuelan police have dispersed an opposition protest with tear gas in the capital Caracas after rocks were thrown at them.

Demonstrators across the country took to the streets to protest fresh powers the government has given itself as part of a 60 day state of emergency and they are pressing for a referendum to recall the government of president Nicolas Maduro.

DEAL REACHED IN UK JUNIOR DOCTORS ROW

A deal has been reached between the government and representatives of junior doctors in the UK, after a row which has led to a series of strikes.

The government had threatened to impose new contracts on junior doctors as it attempts to make the National Health Service more of a seven day service.

Junior doctors said many of them would lose out in terms of overall pay, and have to work longer hours.

The British Medical Association is recommending a new offer be put to its 40 000 members, as Olly Barratt reports.

UGANDA OPPOSITION LEADER CHARGED WITH TREASON


Uganda's opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been charged again with treason following his arrest last week.

 

Besigye is accused of declaring himself president after losing the February presidential elections to the incumbent Yoweri Museveni

Kiiza Besigye was brought to court in a heavily guarded prison van on Wednesday morning

 

He appeared briefly before a magistrate and fresh treason charges read to him.

Besigye did not take a plea and had no legal representation.

 

His lawyer Yusuf Nsibambi told us... their legal team was not officially informed about the court proceedings.

 

Besigye lost the February presidential elections. 

 

He is accused of declaring himself the winner and purportedly taking a presidential oath.

 

He was arrested last week, a day before President Yoweri Museveni was sworn-in for a fifth term in office

 

Besigye has been remanded to prison and is expected back in court at the beginning of next month.

The US Presidential Election has moved up into a higher gear, with the two presumption nominees trading a string of insults.

Belgian bombing suspect Abrini left will on computer, says French TV

Queen Elizabeth the Second outlines British governments upcoming legislative agenda

Britain's Queen Elizabeth the Second has laid out the government's legislative agenda during the annual State Opening of Parliament, a ceremony full of pomp which dates back to 1536.  

The 21-bill agenda includes prison reforms, dealing with  extremism and paving the way for driverless cars and a spaceport.   

Greater powers are proposed for the governors of six major prisons, while inmates could be allowed access to technology and even be able to serve part-time sentences.

Sharapova to face anti-doping panel in London

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is to face an anti-doping panel in London, after testing positive for a banned drug in January.

The former world number said she was not aware that a heart disease drug she had been medically prescribed, had been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Sharapova was provisionally suspended from tennis pending the hearing.
