NIGERIA'S MILITARY HAILS RESCUE OF WOMEN AND GIRLS FROM BOKO HARAM

Nigeria's military says 200 girls and 93 women rescued from a Boko Haram stronghold are not those abducted from a school in Chibok in April 2014.

However, the major operations did result in the seizure of four camps from the Islamist militant group in the Sambisa Forest.

15 000 people are thought to have died in Boko Haram's insurgency and military campaigns against it since 2012.

The kidnap of the schoolgirls taken from Chibok led to global campaigns for their return, but none of them has yet been found.

Richard Dowden of the Royal African Society says this latest operation by Nigerian forces is significant.

But he said police also had to engage in some "soul searching" after a series of incidents across the United States involving the violent deaths of minor offenders.

Theater shooting opening arguments present conflicting profiles of killer

Defense lawyers admit that defendant James Holmes is the gunman who walked into a crowded midnight premiere of a Batman movie premiere in 2012, but they argue that he was in the grips of a psychotic episode. Holmes is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.
