Jobs data set to dominate the week on Wall Street

After the release of somewhat muted GDP data in the United States last week economists will be looking at jobs data for signs the economy isn’t running out of steam.

And with the cold weather taking its toll on the economy so far this year- investors will be hoping economic data heats up as the weather improves.

Palestine set to join International Criminal Court

The stage is set for Palestine to join the International Criminal Court this week.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas formally applied to join the ICC on January 1.

Membership could see Palestinians pursue Israel on war-crime charges.

However, Robert McMahon from the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank says any investigation into the recent conflict could be years-long.

British election campaign to start on Monday

The British Parliament will be formally dissolved on Monday, to begin the closest fought election campaign in decades.
Polls have the Conservative and Labour parties on a virtually level footing, pointing to complex coalition negotiations after the vote on May 7th.

Venture capital firm found innocent of sexual discrimination

A San Francisco jury has found Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers innocent of sexual discrimination. 

Former junior partner Ellen Pao sued the firm for $16 million in lost wages, plus damages, alleging she'd been denied promotion because of her gender.

White House says progress 'ongoing' as Iran nuclear deadline looms

The White House says important progress is being made in the Iran nuclear negotiations. 

Spokesman Josh Earnest told a briefing that the March 31st deadline to wrap up talks remained firm.  

The US wants to seal an agreement that would block Iran's path to obtaining a nuclear weapon in return for sanctions relief.

San Francisco prison guards organized “gladiator-style” fights

San Francisco's public defender has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate reports of "gladiator-style" fights between inmates at the city's main county jail.

A report released by Jeff Adachi says that several guards forced the inmates into duels for "sadistic pleasure", promising them hamburgers if they won and beatings if they refused.

Two people missing after NYC buildings collapse

Authorities say two people are missing after three buildings collapsed
in New York following a gas explosion.

Initial reports suggested that everyone had been accounted for when
the buildings came down, injuring 19 people.

GDP in United States remains at sluggish 2.2%

The United States economy grew at a sluggish rate of 2.2% in the 4th
quarter as companies scaled back on the amount they spent on
inventories.

This number is unchanged from the U.S. Commerce Department's previous
estimate last month and a sharp fall from the 5% growth recorded in
the 3rd quarter.

Twin study to examine effects of space travel on the human body

A novel experiment will be taking place on the International Space Station over the next year to test the effect of prolonged time in space on the human body.

Police Settle Missouri Suit Over Use of Tear Gas


Three police agencies in Missouri have agreed to restrict the use of tear gas in response to non criminal activity.

The move is part of the settlement of a lawsuit alleging that officers used overly harsh tactics to deal with protestors in Ferguson after a white officer fatally shot an unarmed black teenager.

Germanwings co-pilot hid illness from employer

German prosecutors said the co-pilot of the Germanwings plane that crashed in the French Alps hid an ongoing illness from his employer.

Africa's largest nation poised to vote

INTRO: Nigeria's military says it has destroyed Boko Haram's headquarters in the north east of the country. The statement comes as almost 70 million people get ready to vote in this weekend's presidential elections in Nigeria. Russia's biggest bank reports 20% drop in profit

Russia's biggest bank, Sberbank, has reported a 20% drop in profit for 2014.


The main reasons behind the loss are a jump in funding costs and provisions for losses on loans as Russia's economy has weakened.

Gas explosion blamed for NYC buildings collapse

A gas explosion in New York City has been blamed for the collapse of
two buildings.

At least 12 people were injured, 3 of them critically, when the
5-storey buildings came down in New York's East Village.

250 firefighters were on the scene trying to stop the fire from
spreading in the busy residential neighbourhood.

These people live in the apartments surrounding the collapsed buildings.
