BBC drops Top Gear's Clarkson over fracas with a producer


The BBC has sacked Jeremy Clarkson, the presenter of the TV show Top Gear.

It follows an altercation with a producer but was the latest in a series of controversies as Catherine Drew reports from London.

Yemen turmoil threatens US strategy

Shiite rebels in Yemen claim to have seized a military base which, until recently, was central to American efforts targeting the local branch of Al Qaeda.

Meanwhile, the country's beleaguered president has reportedly fled his home in the port city of Aden, amidst clashes between forces loyal to him and fighters of the Houthi movement.

As Malcolm Brown reports from Washington, the turmoil in Yemen is a serious setback for an American strategy that not so long ago was being touted by President Obama as a success.

China hands the U.S. a list of its most-wanted on corruption charges

China has handed a list of its most-wanted corrupt officials to the United States, in a bid to find and return them to China- that's according to the country's state newspaper, the 'China Daily'.

The so-called 'priority list' is said to include more than 150 Chinese government officials believed to be on the run in the United States.

Two Americans among 150 passengers killed in French Alps plane crash

A mother and daughter from the US state of Virginia were have been named as victims of Tuesday's plane crash in the southern French Alps.

Yvonne Selke and daughter Emily were among the 150 passengers killed when the Germanwings jetliner, travelling from Spain to Germany  went down.

Cameron rules out VAT rise in last PMQs before election

British Prime Minister David Cameron has ruled out a rise in a goods and services tax if he wins the upcoming general election. 

In the last Prime Minister's Question Time before the ballot the British leader was pressed whether they would be a rise in VAT by opposition Labour party leader Ed Miliband. 

The announcement came as Mr Miliband poked fun at David Cameron's comments earlier in the week that he would not seek a third term as Prime Minister,  if he wins this years election.

Dramatic arrests at Ukrainian cabinet meeting

Dramatic arrests have been made at a cabinet meeting in Ukraine.


The arrests, made while media were present, are thought to be part of an anti-corruption drive by President Petro Poroshenko's administration.

Cameron pays tribute to crash victims

British Prime Minister David Cameron says the UK stands ready to send assistance to France in the difficult recovery operation following the crash of the Germanwings flight in the French Alps on Tuesday. 

72 German citizens and 49 Spaniards were among the victims. At least 3 Britons are known to have been on the flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.   

In the British parliament David Cameron sent his condolences to the families involved.

3 Britons confirmed on the Germanwings crash flight


British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that at least 3 Britons were on the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday, killing all 150 people on board. 

British authorities have expressed condolences and say they are on standby to offer any assistance to France with the difficult recovery operation. 

A Manchester resident and her baby son are known to have been on the flight.  Marina Bandres Lopez Belio had been returning to her native Spain to attend a funeral. 

49 victims were from Spain and 72 from Germany, including sixteen German teenagers and two teachers who had been on a language exchange programme. 

Philip Hammond says its possible that more British citizens were on the doomed flight.

French, German and Spanish leaders are due to visit the region in the French Alps near where a Germanwings airplane crashed, killing all one hundred and fifty people on board. 

Investigators have retrieved one of the plane's flight recorders but the cause of the crash remains a mystery.

3G 'IN TALKS' TO BUY KRAFT

A Brazilian private equity firm is reportedly in talks to buy US food giant Kraft for more than $40bn.

3G already owns a series of major global food brands and has been linked to several more.

Kraft is one of America's biggest food companies, and owns several iconic US brands.

Recovery efforts continue after Germanwings plane crash

Search and recovery teams have resumed their efforts a day after the plane crash in the French Alps that killed 150 people. 

Investigators have already recovered one of the data recorders from Germanwings flight 9525.

Russia fails to stop UN extending gay benefits

Russia failed this Tuesday to stop the United Nations extending
benefits to spouses of homosexual staff members.

The proposal was overwhelmingly approved by the General Assembly's
budget committee, which passed additional funding to pay for the
allowances.

Pentagon declines to comment on reports that U.S. coalition has begun surveillance flights over Tikrit

The Pentagon has declined to comment on reports that the U.S. led coalition battling the Islamic State group has begun surveillance flights over the northern Iraqi town of Tikrit.

The Associated Press news agency is reporting that it's the first time the alliance has taken part in a major offensive there that's being spearheaded by Iranian-backed Shiite militias.
