United States closes Yemeni embassy following political takeover by Houthis

The United States is closing its embassy in the Gulf state of Yemen following political turmoil in the country.

British broadcasters agree biggest TV deal in football history

British broadcaster Sky News and telecoms firm BT have together spent a record £5.136 billion on Premier League football rights - the biggest TV deal in football history. 

Sky will pay £1.392 billion for each season from 2016-17.

US Small Business Sentiment Slips in January

Optimism among small business owners in the US fell back a bit in
January, according to new data released Tuesday. The National
Federation of Independent Business reported that its small business
optimism index for January dropped 2.5 points, while job growth in the
sector remained solid.

Aid agencies say Europe should to more to prevent migrant deaths

Aid agencies say Europe must provide better naval patrols in the Mediterranean sea to prevent the ever increasing numbers of deaths of migrants attempting to cross onto EU shores.

On Monday, hypothermia killed twenty nine people on board an exposed Italian naval vessel after they had been rescued.

Coca-Cola sales up in the United States

The world's largest drinks company Coca-Cola has released fourth
quarter earnings that came in better than Wall Street estimates.

The boost to profits was helped largely by higher prices as analysts
say Americans continue to drink less soda.

White House, family confirm death of "last American hostage" held by IS

The White House is vowing to bring to justice the Islamic State militants it says are responsible for the "captivity and death" of an American woman in Syria.


The family of 26 year old Kayla Mueller say they have now received proof that she died, although it's not clear whether he death took place as a result of a Jordanian air strike as IS had claimed.

Death of American hostage in Syria confirmed

The parents of Kayla Mueller, the last American known to be held by the Islamic State militants, have issued a statement that their daughter has died.

The young American dedicated her life to humanitarian works and was working in a hospital in Syria when she was kidnapped.

Obama preparing to ask Congress for new war powers

U.S. President Barack Obama is preparing to ask Congress for new war powers to support his campaign against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

So far, he has relied on his executive powers as president to launch airstrikes against the militant group, but he now needs the approval of Congress to expand military operations.

It will represent the first war vote in Congress in more than a decade.

Assad says "third parties" provide information about US-led strikes on IS

The Syrian President Bashar al Assad says his country is receiving indirect information about the US-led airstrikes on Islamic State.


In an interview with the BBC he concedes that Syrian armed forces have managed to avoid conflict with the American-led coalition thanks to information that he says is provided by Iraq and other third parties.


He also denies that the Syrian army is using barrel bombs against its opponents in the country's civil war.

Prince Charles to visit new Saudi King

Prince Charles will meet with Saudi Arabia's new king during his six day tour of the Middle East.


The Prince of Wales visited the Saudi capital Riyadh last month following the death of King Abdullah.

British business group calls for earlier EU referendum

The head of one of Britain's biggest business groups has called for a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU as soon as possible.

UK inmates had human rights breached

A judge in Europe has ruled that more than one-thousand British prisoners did have their human rights breached when they were printed from voting in elections…

It is the fourth time the UK has been found in violation of its blanket ban on giving convicted prisoners the vote.

SYRIA 'RECEIVES INFORMATION ON US AIR STRIKES'

Syrian President Bashar al Assad says his government is receiving information from the US about air strikes on the Islamic State militant group.

In an interview with the BBC President Assad denied there had been any direct co-operation with Washington.

He also denied allegations his forces have been dropping 'indiscriminate' barrel bombs on rebel-held areas in Syria, killing thousands of civilians.

But he told the BBC his government is passed information about US operations.

Pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine claim to have surrounded the strategic town of Debaltseve which has seen intense fighting for over a week.
