114th US Congress opens

Tuesday is the first day of the 114th Congress of the United States.

Lawmakers are returning to work in Washington, with Senators and Representatives elected in November's mid term elections taking up their new jobs on Capitol Hill, where Republicans now control both Houses.

Euthanasia procedure for Belgian murderer and rapist suspended

A rapist and murderer in Belgium who has been granted permission to undergo euthanasia has had the date for his death suspended.

Frank Van Den Bleeken was scheduled to be killed by lethal injection on Sunday but Belgium's Ministry of Justice now says it will not go ahead.

Son of NYC hedge fund manager charged with his murder

The son of New York hedge fund manager Thomas Gilbert Sr has been charged with his father's murder following an argument over his allowance- that's according to police in New York.

Thomas Gilbert Jr was arrested on Monday on murder charges and for illegally carrying a weapon.

SpaceX postpones test to land rocket on barge in Atlantic

The American company SpaceX has postponed an attempt to land part of a rocket on a barge positioned in the Atlantic Ocean.


The test is now expected to take place at the end of the week.


It's a bid to see whether it's possible to recycle pieces of space debris.


Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks says the company hopes one day to avoid the cost of building completely new rockets for every mission.

Rolls-Royce sees record car sales

Kurdish fighters now in control of 80% of Kobane

Kurdish fighters battling the Islamic State in Kobane, on the Turkish border with Syria, now control 80% of the town, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Kurds backed by Iraqi peshmerga forces have been fighting the militant group in the town since September.

Migrant smugglers are using a new route into Europe

People-traffickers smuggling migrants into Europe are using a new route according the the European Union border agency, Frontex.

Nearly 1200 migrants were found on cargo ships in the Mediterranean sea last week and thousands died making similar journeys in 2014.

ROLLS-ROYCE REPORTS RECORD SALES

Rolls-Royce sold a record number of cars in 2014 - over 4000 for the first time in the company's history.

Sales rose 12 % worldwide on 2013, hitting 4063, with the US the biggest market for the British-based brand.

The BMW-owned firm says it will decide in 2015 whether to enter the SUV market.

It has also created 200 new jobs in the UK in the last 18 months.

Rolls-Royce remains the top seller globally of cars which retail for more than €200,000 / £157,000.

Dow Jones falls 331 as oil drops to $50

Two American skiers killed in Austrian Alps

Two American skiers have been killed in an avalanche in the Austrian Alps while skiing near their training base.


The pair aged 19 and 20 were were junior members of the US team and were prospects for the 2015 Alpine Skiing World Cup.

President Barack Obama to meet with Mexican counterpart

US urges Mideast nations to keep doors open to Syrian refugees

The U.S. is urging Middle Eastern nations and especially Lebanon to keep their doors open to more Syrian refugees.

Lebanon's Interior Minister has indicated his country has no more capacity and would impose restrictions to limit the flow of refugees from the Syrian crisis.

The U.S. is the main donor for aid for the Syrian refugees and U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki urged Lebanon to accept more fleeing the conflict.

The Obama administration is joining with the voices of the diplomatic community, urging talks as Libya descends into chaos.

A Greek oil tanker was bombed by the Libyan air force on suspicion of supporting Islamic militants while in a moment of good news, Egyptian Coptic Christians were released.
