Profound implications for CIA report

U.S. Senator Harry Reid, the outgoing majority leader, is calling the implications of the newly released report on torture by the CIA profound.

He also says, the report shows torture does not work.

Senator Reid introduced Senator Dianne Feinstein and her intelligence committee report on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

British royals lay flowers, leave note at 9/11 Memorial

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have left a bouquet of flowers and a hand-written note at Ground Zero in New York - scene of the 9/11 Al Qaeda attacks on America.


In a visit to the September 11th Memorial in Lower Manhattan they paid tribute to the nearly 3 thousand victims, including 67 British citizens.

Sen. Feinstein to release CIA report

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the outgoing chair of the U.S. Senate's Intelligence Committee, is set to release the report on torture by the CIA.

The report is six years in the making, and much of the 500 page executive summary will remain redacted.

Reporters grilled Senator Feinstein on why she is releasing the report as she walked to the floor of the U.S. Senate.

She said, transparency and accountability are the hallmarks of a great and just society

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid their respects at the 9/11
Memorial in New York City.

Controversial report into Bush-era use of torture published in Washington

A long-awaited report on the Bush administration's use of torture in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks is being published in Washington.


The report, written by Democrats in the US Senate, is expected to shed light on some of the CIA's darkest practices in the years after the 2001 attacks.


Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks says security has been tightened at American diplomatic compounds worldwide ahead of the report's publication.

Last French hostage freed

Militants from the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group have released the last French person to be kept hostage in the world.


Serge Lazarevich was taken in November 2011 while in Mali and says he was in relatively good health, as our Correspondent Jack Parrack reports from Paris.

France accuses Germany of aiding the rise of French far-right parties.

France is accusing the German government of fanning the flames for the rise of the far right political group, the Front National, in the French parliament.

It comes following comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said France has not been performing strong enough economic reforms to reduce its substantial public deficit.

Ukraine holds 'day of silence' to try and get violated ceasefire back on track

A so called 'day of silence' is being attempted in eastern Ukraine to try and get a repeatedly violated ceasefire back on track.

US Supreme Court rejects BP oil claims challenge

The US Supreme Court has rejected oil giant's BP's challenge to a compensation settlement for the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In 2012, BP agreed to the multi-billion dollar deal but later said the plan was unclear and BP's consent misunderstood.

Uganda Maid Court Case

A Ugandan nanny who was caught on a hidden camera assaulting a toddler has pleaded guilty to torture.

White House Defends Hostage Rescue Policy Following Failed Yemen Raid

The United States is defending its attempts to rescue hostages in the Middle East, even though the latest mission in Yemen ended in the death of two hostages.

Eleven people were reported to have died in the raid, including the hostages and the militants.

Authorities in the Indian capital Delhi have banned the car service start-up Uber, after a female passenger accused an Uber driver of rape.

Brown and Garner deaths spark California protests

Violent protests have erupted for a second night in California over the recent police killings in Ferguson, Missouri and New York City.
