South Africa to consider hosting 2015 AFCON Cup after Morocco cancels due to ebola

INTRO:  The Confederation of African Football has asked South Africa and Ghana to consider hosting the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. That's after Morocco advised CAF it has cancelled the tournament due to fears that football fans might bring and spread the ebola virus in Morocco. Ebola has so far claimed more than 4500 lives in primarily West Africa.  Gary Alfonso reports.

Florida TV debate brought to a standstill......by an electric fan

In Florida, a televised debate between two candidates battling to be the state's next governor was thrown into uproar after one of them used a fan to cool himself under the studio's hot TV lights.


Florida Governor Rick Scott refused to take to the stage for the debate, after alleging that his opponent, Charlie Crist, was breaking the rules.

ISIS extemists 'pushed back' in Kobani after dozens of US-led air strikes

Islamic State fighters have been forced to retreat from the north Syrian Town of Kobani according to local reports.

Vladimir Putin is in Serbia to boost ties

State says Pistorius can receive fair treatment in prison

INTRO:  The Prosecution in the case against Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who has been found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) for killing his girlfriend, says the disabled athlete will be safe if given a prison sentence. The High Court in South Africa has been hearing arguments in mitigation and aggravation of sentence. The judge may sentence Pistorius tomorrow and the athlete could receive anything from a fine to 15 years in prison, The athlete says he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot and killed her in February last year. Steenkamp's family has asked the court for justice.

Ebola fears at Madrid airport activate emergency protocols

Emergency health protocols have been put in place at Madrid airport after a passenger on a flight from Paris to Madrid complained of a fever sparking fears of Ebola.

The passenger had arrived in the French capital from the Nigerian capital Lagos and was on an onward flight to Madrid.

Steenkamp family feels Pistorius must be punished

INTRO:  The family of the woman shot and killed by paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has asked the High Court in South Africa to sentence the athlete to a punishment befitting the severity of the crime he committed. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) for shooting and killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in February last year. Pistorius said it was an accident and he mistook her for an intruder. 

The Defence has argued Pistorius should serve community service under house arrest, while the prosecution wants the athlete to go to prison.  

Steenkamp's cousin, Kim Martin, gave evidence and said the Steenkamp family wants justice to be done.

British nurse says he will return to west Africa where he caught Ebola

William Pooley, a British nurse treated for Ebola in hospital in the UK capital London has announced he is returning to west Africa where he caught the virus.


He was flown back to the UK in August.

European shares opened higher in Thursday trading, before dropping back again.

This after a major sell-off on Wednesday.

WHO PLAYS DOWN EBOLA OUTBREAK IN THE WEST

The World Health Organization is trying to play down the chances of a major Ebola outbreak in the West, while calling for more help in Africa.

The WHO says US and other western healthcare systems are strong enough to deal with the cases of the virus.

This as the US investigates how a nurse with Ebola was allowed to travel on a plane after treating another victim in Texas.

EU health ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss the outbreak which has killed around 4500 people so far, mostly in west Africa.

Obama says U.S.'s ebola response must be "more aggressive"

President Barack Obama says the U.S. must monitor the ebola crisis in a "much more aggressive way."

On Wednesday afternoon the president postponed a campaign trip to hold an emergency meeting with top health officials at the White House, where he was updated on the increasing number of ebola cases in the United States.

A second health care worker at a hospital in Dallas has contracted the virus, after treating a Thomas Eric Duncan, a patient from Liberia who later died.

In remarks following that meeting, Obama said he'd ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to send teams to any new cases.
