Second US health care worker tests positive for Ebola

A second health care worker in Texas has tested positive for Ebola, having contracted it from Liberian victim Thomas Eric Duncan who died from the disease.

US health officials say an initial test was done late Tuesday night, and a second test is being conducted in Atlanta- headquarters to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This latest case has raised more questions about US hospitals' preparedness in dealing with Ebola outbreaks.

Steenkamp family clarifies Pistorius money issues

INTRO:  Proceedings on day 3 of the sentencing hearings in the trial of Paralynpic athlete Oscar Pistorius have been dominated by the reports of monthly payments and bulk settlements offered to the Steenkamp family by the athlete. Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) for the shooting and killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February last year. 

The court is hearing arguments this week in mitigation or aggravation of sentence. 

But Defence Attorney Barry Roux today read out a statement from the Steenkamp family, clarifying facts around the payments. Roux said Pistorius paid the family about $600 per month for living expenses after their daughter, who financially supported them, died.

Proposals to make Trafalgar Square smoke-free

Smoking should be banned in Trafalgar Square and other public places according to a new report trying to improve the health of Londoners.   

The report, "Better Health for London" says around 1.2 million city residents smoke and 67 school children take up the habit each day.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Serbia calls football violence stunt "political provocation"

Serbia's foreign minister Ivica Dacic [iv-eet-sa da-chich] has called the events which lead to an outbreak of violence between the Serbian and Albanian national football teams and their fans "political provocation".

A second health care worker in Texas has tested positive for Ebola, according to officials.

This as US President Barack Obama prepares to hold a video conference on tackling Ebola later (Wednesday) with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy.

It follows warnings from the World Health Organization there could be 10 000 new cases a week within two months if international efforts to contain the outbreak are not stepped up.

4447 people are now thought to have died, the majority in West Africa.

But the WHO does say the rate of new infections in some areas has slowed.

Ukrainian and Russian Presidents have phone call

A Kremlin statement says the Ukrainian and Russian Presidents have discussed measures to restore peace in eastern Ukraine in a phone call.


They are expected to continue discussions on the conflict as well as on a natural gas dispute between the two countries on the sidelines of a summit in Milan, Italy, being held October 16th and 17th.

Decreasing risk for further Ebola infections in Texas

The Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says the risk for further Ebola infections following the death of Thomas Eric Duncan is decreasing.

One nurse is in stable condition after she was diagnosed with Ebola following a breach in care protocols at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Thomas Frieden says, the 48 people who had some contact with the Liberian man remain healthy.

US continues to work with Nigeria to rescue schoolgirls

The Obama administration says it is continuing to work with the Nigerian government to rescue the estimated 270 Chibok girls, the school girls kidnapped six months ago by Boko Haram.

Turkish airstrike complicates US talks on Islamic State

The reports that Turkey has conducted an airstrike against the Kurds has complicated the talks underway in Washington about battling the Islamic State fighters.

US hosts meeting with allied defence ministers

Zuckerbergs Donate $25 Million to Fight Ebola
