Over 30 countries meet in Paris to combat IS

Representatives from over 30 countries, including the US, Russia and China, are meeting in Paris to discuss an international effort to combat Islamic State militants.


According to US officials, a number of Arab countries are willing to participate in air strikes against IS targets in Iraq.


The meeting comes following the murder of 44 year old British aid worker David Haines.


His brother Michael has called for more to be done to stop the militant group.

Six year prison sentence for American in North Korea

The regime of Kim Jong Un has sentenced Matthew Miller to six years hard labor

He reportedly entered North Korea with the intent of violating that country's law in order to be jailed to document Pyongyang's human rights abuses

Arab Countries To Support Anti-IS Air Strikes

A number of Arab countries have offered to carry out airstrikes
against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, meaning that at
least some of the 10 Arab countries are willing to play a role in the
military offensive. The news was confirmed by officials who are
traveling with Secretary of State John Kerry, who is on an
international trip to seek support for the anti-IS campaign.

After Haines murder, White House presses for anti-IS coalition

The White House has condemned the murder of British aid worker David Haines at the hands of Islamic State militants.


And Australia says it's now sending 600 troops to the Middle East to support President Obama's threatened military operation against Islamic State.

Russia sends humanitarian aid convoy into Eastern Ukraine

A Russian humanitarian aid convoy of 220 lorries has crossed the border from Russia into Eastern Ukraine without permission from Kiev.

Russia says it comprises of 2000 tonnes of food, water purification supplies and medical supplies to help the people struggling in the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.

Obama declares Napa earthquake a major disaster; releases funds

President Barack Obama has declared last month's Napa Valley earthquake in California a major disaster.

The decision automatically releases federal funds to help repair infrastructure which was badly damaged by the magnitude 6.0 quake.

Yosemite National Park wildfire grows

A wildfire burning in Yosemite National Park, California, is approaching 5,000 acres in size.

The blaze has kept several popular areas of the Park closed this week.

The fire started in July after a lightning strike but wasn't extinguished as officials considered it part of the forest's natural regrowth cycle.

But recent strong winds have pushed the flames out of control.

US sanctions to hit Russia’s energy sector

Questions remain about Pres. Obama's strategy

Iraq watchers and former American officials are raising questions about the strategy to fight the Islamic State fighters, as laid out by U.S. President Barack Obama earlier in the week.

Russian Banks targeted by US sanctions

Russia has seen a significant stepping up of international sanctions from the EU and US with Washington targeting the Russian banking sector.

US Targets Russia's Biggest Bank, Part of new EU Coordinated Sanctions

The United States has added Russia's largest bank, Sberbank,  to an expanded list of sanctioned entities, related to Moscow's involvement in Ukraine.

The move is likely to lead to much higher borrowing costs for Russian consumers and institutions.

ISIS boosts fighting capacity significantly - CIA

The U.S. believes ISIS has tripled its fighting capacity, according to new estimates from the CIA.

The report comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry travels to Turkey and Egypt to rally support across the Middle East to increase military strikes against the Islamic State.

IAN PAISLEY DIES

Dr Ian Paisley - one of the most significant figures in Northern Ireland and its peace process - has died at the age of 88.

The Protestant preacher and politician spent years refusing any compromise with the terrorist group the IRA but he later entered Northern Ireland's government at Stormont with Sinn Fein in a power-sharing deal in 2007.
