The UAE's Central Bank has ordered a special inspection of Egyptian bank Banque Misr's branches after Washington moved to sever the bank from the US financial system, accusing it of helping Tehran evade sanctions.
The economic pressure campaign is running alongside continued military action — US forces have struck Iranians accused of laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, breaking a period of calm during which the White House had said it was focused on sanctions rather than force.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the country's exports have fallen by nearly thirty-five per cent under the weight of American sanctions.
