A United States Senate committee has voted along party lines to hold Dr Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress, after the former government infectious disease chief invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than a hundred times during testimony last week.
Senator Rand Paul, the Republican who chairs the Homeland Security Committee, says the contempt referral will be hand-delivered to the Justice Department on Thursday.
Dr Fauci's lawyer has called the vote a political stunt, saying his client has committed no crime.
