Mumbai has recorded barely half its normal August monsoon rainfall, with just 286 millimetres falling in the first nineteen days of the month against an average of more than 560.
The dry spell follows a record-wet July, when the city received more than 1,400 millimetres — well above the monthly norm — and patchy rain and overcast skies continued on the evening of Monday the 24th of August.
Across India more broadly, forecasters warn the overall monsoon season could end up significantly below average.
