Moderna and Merck have announced the first-ever positive Phase 3 results for a personalised mRNA cancer vaccine in melanoma patients, a breakthrough that has sent both companies' share prices sharply higher.
The trial tested the vaccine intismeran alongside Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda in more than eleven hundred patients whose tumours had been surgically removed, and the companies say it significantly reduced the risk of cancer returning.
Moderna's president has said thousands of patients could benefit as soon as next year, with the therapy already on an expedited review pathway with regulators in the United States and Europe.
