The first ceasefire verification team has deployed to eastern Congo under the peace deal brokered by Qatar — travelling by United Nations helicopter to Minembwe in South Kivu province, where heavy fighting has been reported in recent weeks.
The deployment comes days after the Congolese government and the M23-led rebel alliance agreed a roadmap for peace talks following five days of negotiations in Switzerland.
However, M23 has accused government forces of shelling a village near Minembwe on Monday, causing civilian casualties — an allegation the Congolese military has not yet responded to.
