Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has confirmed he is stepping down after co-hosts Mexico were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup by England, with his assistant Rafael Marquez — the former Barcelona defender — named as his replacement.
England beat Mexico three-two in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Azteca on Sunday night, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice in under two minutes and Harry Kane converting a penalty for his sixth goal of the tournament.
It was only the third time a visiting team has won a competitive match at the famous stadium since it opened in 1966.
