European authorities are warning that wildfires burning across southern France and Spain may not be fully extinguished for months, even as the blaze in the Gironde department west of Bordeaux has held steady for a second consecutive night.
More than two hundred thousand people have been evacuated from the region in what has been described as France's largest peacetime evacuation since the Second World War, with some forty-two thousand hectares destroyed.
French President Emmanuel Macron visited the area on Monday and chaired an emergency cabinet meeting to coordinate the response.
