French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez says the wildfires near Bordeaux did not advance overnight, but has warned that authorities must remain on high alert as forecasters predict another heatwave will hit France later in the week.
The blazes have burned some forty-two thousand hectares of forest and forced more than two hundred thousand people from their homes, threatening the city of eight hundred and fifty thousand residents.
French President Emmanuel Macron chaired an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday before travelling to the region, where he warned the battle against the fires could last not just weeks but months.
