Evacuees from three villages near Bordeaux were allowed to return home on Tuesday after the massive Gironde wildfire stabilised following a calm night — though French authorities warned residents they must be prepared to leave again at short notice.
The blaze has burned through some 42,000 hectares since it broke out on the 22nd of July, forcing more than 300,000 evacuations across France and Spain and killing at least one person.
Firefighters have held the fire's perimeter for several days, but have not yet fully extinguished it.
