VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKE DEATH TOLL NEARS 600 AS US MOBILISES 150 MILLION DOLLARS IN AID AND DEPLOYS MILITARY ASSETS

The death toll from Venezuela's twin earthquakes has risen sharply to at least 589, with the United States pledging 150 million dollars in aid and deploying military assets to support the rescue effort.

The rapid American response comes after a period of diplomatic realignment between Washington and Caracas, following the removal of former President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year.

Before the quakes struck on Wednesday, the United Nations said nearly eight million people in Venezuela were already in need of humanitarian support.
