The United Nations' maritime agency has halted its evacuation of eleven thousand stranded sailors from the Strait of Hormuz after Iran's Revolutionary Guard struck a Singapore-flagged cargo ship near the Omani coast.
The attack has raised questions about how the White House will respond, with US crude for August delivery dropping more than one per cent on Thursday and Brent crude falling below seventy-two dollars and fifty-one cents a barrel.
Iran had warned it would deal with any vessel using a new route through the strait that Tehran called unacceptable.
Mitch Mccann has the story from New York.
