NINETEEN EU STATES PUSH TO FAST-TRACK OFFSHORE DEPORTATION HUBS AS FRANCE LEADS OPPOSITION

Nineteen EU member states are pushing to accelerate plans for offshore deportation hubs in third countries, after the European Parliament backed the bloc's new Return Regulation last week.

Eight countries, including France and Germany, oppose the scheme, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying the concept is incompatible with European values.

The regulation still requires formal sign-off from the Council before it can take effect.
