The World Health Organization's director-general has announced five Ebola patient recoveries in the Democratic Republic of Congo — among the first confirmed survivals from the Bundibugyo strain — as he opened a new treatment centre in the outbreak's epicentre on Sunday.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement in Bunia, the capital of the affected Ituri province, before travelling to Kinshasa for talks with the DRC prime minister and President Felix Tshisekedi on stepping up medical supplies and funding.
The outbreak — now the third-largest since Ebola was discovered — has produced more than a hundred confirmed cases in the DRC and nine in neighbouring Uganda, while Brazil is investigating two suspected cases and Italy has ruled one out.
