US Defence Secretary says Donald Trump chose mercy by agreeing to ceasefire.

The United States and Iran are both claiming victory and have agreed to a two-week ceasefire.

It comes after President Trump threatened to end a "whole civilization" if no deal was reached.

At a Pentagon Press briefing Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed President Trump could have crippled Iran's economy in minutes but he chose mercy.

The ceasefire is proving to be a fragile one.

Iran is accusing Israel of violating the agreement with its strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut.

According to Iranian state news, oil tanker traffic has once again stalled in the Strait of Hormuz as a result.

The White House is also denying that the 10 point plan shared by Iranian media outlets is the same proposal described by Donald Trump as "workable" and the basis for upcoming negotiations in Islamabad.
