UK Government U-Turn Over Welfare Cuts

The UK government has been forced into a significant policy U-turn over proposed cuts to the welfare system.

Ministers have made major concessions to Labour rebels in order to head off more than 100 MPs who were planning to vote against their own party in Parliament next week.

The changes mean people with disabilities who currently receive the personal independence payment will continue to do so. Tougher eligibility rules will be introduced for new recipients from November next year.

It's the third u-turn in recent months, as Keir Starmer's government tries to enforce unpopular policies aimed at cutting public spending.

Labour MP Rachael Maskell says the climbdown does not go far enough…

In: "Yes it will.."

Out: "…personal independence payments."
