India halts river water to Pakistan for hydro projects, heightening tensions

Intro:

India has reportedly halted river flows to Pakistan to expand its hydroelectric capacity, amid rising tensions following its unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty.

Islamabad, angered by the move, has vowed to retaliate and defend its water rights.

This marks the first time water flow has been halted since the water-sharing agreement was established in the 1960s—despite India and Pakistan having fought three wars since then.
