1100 Prisoners To Be Released In UK To Combat Overcrowding

Around 1 thousand 100 prisoners are due to be freed early from jails in England and Wales today (Tuesday).


It's part of efforts to ease prison overcrowding, and follows the release of nearly two thousand prisoners in September.


In a bid to find a long term solution, the UK Government is launching a sentencing review that will explore tougher punishments outside of prison while making sure there is space to incarcerate the most dangerous offenders.


Lord Timpson, Minister of State for Prisons, told the Prison Governors Association conference that they were trying to repair the damage done by the previous government
