India calls US court summons for its NSA 'unwarranted'

India has criticised a summons issued by a US district court to its NSA and former head of its foreign intelligence agency.

The summons were issued in connection with allegations that Indian officials were involved in a plot to assassinate an American Sikh separatist leader in the US.

India identified the Sikh leader - Gurpatwant Singh Pannun - as a 'terrorist' in 2020.

The summons were issued by the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. It names the Government of India and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, among others.

It has asked New Delhi to file a reply within 21 days.
