House building, rail nationalisation and greater devolved powers announced in state opening of UK parliament


The new UK government has pledged to make it easier to build houses, bring train companies under public ownership and devolve some decision making to regional bodies.


The policies were among a raft of measures announced as part of the state opening of parliament. 


King Charles read the legislative plans of the new Labour government, which focused heavily on rebuilding the economy.

The government promised that the legislative programme will "be mission led and based upon the principles of security, fairness and opportunity for all."


Opposition parties have questioned how the government will be able to pay for it all.
