The Vatican has issued an apology after the Pope reportedly used an offensive term for gay people in a private meeting with Italian bishops earlier this month.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said the Pope "never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he apologises to those who felt offended by the use of a term reported by others."
