Authorities are planning to open a temporary alternate channel in the US city of Baltimore, to allow some marine traffic to enter the port.
Cleanup efforts are underway there after a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge last week - blocking access to the busy cargo terminal.
But the operation is being complicated by fast-moving waters and dangerous conditions underneath the surface.
Salvage experts say clearing debris in the Patapsco River is likely to take weeks.
