Former US president Donald Trump has angered Western allies by saying he would not protect NATO countries from Russian aggression - if they don't spend enough on defence.
During a re-election campaign rally, he said he had warned countries in the trans-Atlantic military alliance that he would "encourage" Russia to attack any Nato member that failed to meet its defence spending target of 2 percent of their gross domestic product.
