Indian Prime Minister Modi's party is set to bring in a contentious common civil law also known as the Uniform Civil Code in Himalayan region of Uttarakhand next week.
Officials say the law, which will apply across religions, will be replicated across other regions ruled by Mr Modi's party the BJP.
Framing a national common law has been a decades-old promise of the ruling BJP.
