Special counsel Jack Smith who is investigating former US president Donald Trump has asked the country's highest court to decide whether Mr Trump has any immunity from criminal prosecution for alleged crimes he committed while in office.
Mr Smith's rare request is a bid to bypass the appeals court process and get a quick decision in order to prevent a delay in the former president's election interference trial - which is scheduled for March.
