India's Supreme Court upholds repeal of Kashmir's special status

India's Supreme Court has rejected petitions that challenged the revocation of special status for the region of Jammu and Kashmir.

But it has held that elections in the region must be conducted by September next year.

In 2019, India's government revoked Article 370 of the constitution that had given significant autonomy to the region- including a separate flag and the right to make its own laws.

Neha Poonia has more on what the court ruled.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the judgment a 'beacon of hope' for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Back in 2019, the Prime Minister had called the revocation a way to integrate the restive Kashmir region with the rest of the country.
