Race for US House Speaker hots up to fill vacant seat of power

Just days after his historic toppling, the race is on to succeed Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Lawmakers in the United States on Monday narrowly voted to remove him from the role — the first time that's ever happened in American history — leaving Capitol Hill in a state of unprecedented stasis, with another government shutdown deadline looming.

Congressman Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican politician, led the charge to oust the man who was until recently second-in-line of succession for the Presidency. But he's ruled himself out of contention.

Benji Hyer has the latest on the runners and riders.
