The Moscow Appeals Court rejected the appeal by the jailed opposition politician Alexei Navalny against conviction on extremism charges that added 19 more years to his current jail term. One of President Putin's most vocal critics, Navalny had dismissed accusations as groundless and designed to silence his criticism of the brutal regime. Since Navalny's arrest and imprisonment 2021 after a failed poisoning, which he blamed on the Kremlin, his political movement has been declared "extremist" and, in effect, eliminated.
