US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is on her first visit to China and is expected to hold talks with several senior Chinese officials.
Analysts say this is America's chance to try to reframe its relationship with Beijing.
Even though both sides have said they don't expect a breakthrough, a US official travelling with Ms Yellen has said the talks aren't 'fruitless'.
