Debt ceiling deal faces first test

The bipartisan debt ceiling deal agreed by US President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over the weekend is set to face its first big test.

It goes before the House Rules Committee on Tuesday afternoon. Hardline conservative members of the 15 person panel have criticised the plan.

The US must pass legislation to increase the debt limit by June 5th to avert a default causing economic disaster.
