US Secretary of State Antony Blinken could be held in contempt of Congress if his State Department doesn't hand over classified communications relating to America's chaotic exit from Afghanistan.
A powerful Republican Party lawmaker — Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — is pushing for the release of the sensitive documents written by diplomats at the US Embassy in Kabul shortly before the August 2021 withdrawal.
He alleges the cables in question warned Mr Blinken about the potential fall of the city weeks before the Taliban takeover.
