Fresh cracks appear in India's Joshimath town

Authorities in India are sounding the alarm after the Himalayan town of Joshimath (Joe-she-mutt) has developed fresh cracks.

The city is going through a process called subsidence.

It happens when the ground buckles under its own weight due to natural or man-made reasons.
