European Council President Charles Michel urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to use his influence on Russia over its war in Ukraine during talks in Beijing on Thursday.
President Michel's trip marks the first time a leader of one of the European Union institutions has visited China since 2018. The war in Ukraine and its fallout have sparked renewed tensions in EU-China relations.
Beijing says it wants peace, but has not explicitly condemned Russia for the invasion.
President Michel says he hopes China will use all possible tools to convince Moscow to respect Ukraine's sovereignty.
