EU expects recession to hit in winter months

Recession is expected to hit the European Union in the upcoming winter months, according to the European Commission's latest economic forecast.

The EU's executive revised growth forecasts upward for 2022, citing consumer spending as COVID-19 lockdowns eased. But the Commission now predicts an economic slowdown, forecasting that inflation will also remain high next year. The bloc expects growth of 0.3% for 2023 overall.

Paolo Gentiloni is European Economy Commissioner.
