Bank of England begins selling government bonds

The Bank of England has begun selling off government debt, in a move hailed as a milestone in economic history.


Britain's central bank is holding the first auction of its nearly £850 billion of UK government bonds, or gilts.


These were built up under its quantitative easing programme - it will now enter a period of quantitative tightening.
