The European Commission has unveiled a raft of new proposals aimed at taming soaring energy prices in the European Union.
The plans include new tools for joint EU gas purchases to avoid member states outbidding each other on an already tight market, and frameworks for gas-sharing in crisis circumstances.
As the 27 EU members squabble over when, if, and how to cap wholesale gas prices, the Commission has also put forward a compromise plan. Under proposals, temporary prices limits for transactions on Europe's main gas exchange can kick in to curb extreme spikes.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke to reporters in Strasbourg.
